Thomas “Tom” Maurice Murphy, age 68, a resident of Southampton, died peacefully on Saturday April 16, 2022 at the Cooley Dickinson Hospital after a long courageous battle with cancer. Tom was born in Springfield, MA on February 2, 1954 and was the son of the late Mary Ursula (Cavanaugh) Murphy and Thomas Joseph Murphy. He was raised in Springfield and was educated in the public schools there graduating from Springfield Technical School in the class of 1972. Tom was a Vietnam War Veteran, having served on the USS Forrestal with the United States Navy from January 1, 1974 through March 6, 1979. Tom work in the maintenance department for Wal-Mart in Northampton for many years until his illness forced him into early retirement.
Tom was married on October 28, 1991 to Joyce Dorothy (Ashton) Murphy and together they shared close to fourteen years of marriage until her death on August 31, 2005. Tom was a quite man with a great personality, quick wit along with a great sense of humor. He enjoyed antiquing, board games, chess, card playing, watching professional sports, classic cars, rock music and was very proud of his Irish heritage.
He is survived by his loving and devoted son, Shaun Patrick Murphy of Southampton, many friends and co workers. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Joyce, mother, father and brother, Kevin Stewart Murphy.
Tom will be buried with full Military Honors on Friday May 13, 2022 at 3pm at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1380 Main Street in Agawam, Ma. there are no calling hours.
