After college he moved to California where he served in the Navy on submarines for six years during the Vietnam War. He was very proud of his time in the military and talked about it often. He was a member of the Legion Riders in Easthampton.
Fred had a passion for sports, he umpired softball and refereed basketball for 35+ years. He enjoyed being an active part of the games and the people that were involved.
